I LOVED Ballet Cat!
Ballet Cat really LOVES to pretend ballet. Sparkles usually goes along but today must make a confession. It is a very secret secret. “Sometimes I don’t want to play ballet!” While Sparkles expects Ballet Cat to be devastated, Ballet Cat reveals that there is one thing even more beloved than ballet… and that is Sparkles! The last page shows them doing all of the things Sparkles suggested they do… playing checkers, drinking lemonade, and working on a craft.
In Shea’s illustrations, we only get the interaction between the two characters. There is no background. Only the black outline forms of Sparkles and Ballet Cat. Each page is filled with bright, rich colors! Ballet Cat seems to be wearing a pearl necklace and a tutu. This paired with the whole ballet thing would lead most to think Ballet Cat is female. Sparkles doesn’t appear to have a gender as far as I can tell.
A lovely little story all about the give and take of loving someone and friendship. Sometimes we must make a compromise when working and playing with others. If you like Willems’ Elephant and Piggie, you will REALLY enjoy Ballet Cat.
I hope he plans to do a series of these!
