#PictureBook Review: The Mouse Who Ate the Moon by Petr Horáček

The Mouse Who Ate the MoonThe Mouse Who Ate the Moon by Petr Horáček
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Before falling asleep, Little Mouse admired the moon. When she woke up the next morning, she found a piece of it had fallen on the ground outside of her hole! It smelled delicious so she takes a bite… and accidentally eats half of the slice of moon! Rabbit and Mole tell Little Mouse that no one can eat the moon but she is certain she did. That night they take her out to watch the full, round moon and they finish the rest of the slice of moon (really a banana) together.

Petr Horacek gives us a cute little friendship story with beautiful peekaboo illustration and design. Each spread of pages contains a die cut that shows a peek at the next page. I really like that the banana is never actually named which makes it a good interactive book. After reading it, you could ask the children to tell what it REALLY is, ask them if they like bananas, or if they think anyone could really eat the moon. It would also be an opportunity to talk about the cycle of the moon. I’m always looking for a STEM tie-in! 🙂
