A bunny and a mouse plant and tend to some seeds and are rewarded with carrot, tomatoes, and lettuce plants. Some birds appear looking expectantly at the harvest and a row breaks out. No one wants to share.
“If you plant a seed of selfishness, in a very short time, it will grow, and grow, and grow into a heap of trouble.”
After they settle down, all covered in tomato seeds, the mouse hands over a tomato to the birds. The birds fly off and bring back bags of seeds that they drop on the ground. They all help tend the garden together and get a huge harvest.
“But if you plant a seed of kindness, in almost no time at all, the fruits of kindness will grow, and grow, and grow… and they are very, very sweet.”
Children and adults alike will appreciate this book’s simple message. A beautiful book about kindness and sharing, it is clear why this title is showing up as a winner in Mock Caldecott results.
