Pete dons his favorite four groovy button shirt. But as he goes about his day, he keeps loosing buttons! Oh no! But does he get down about it? Goodness no! Once all of the buttons have popped off of his shirt, he realizes that he still has one that he will never loose… his belly button!
I. Adore. This Book.
SUCH an amazing storytime book. You can’t help but groove along with Pete’s button song (which you HAVE to sing during storytime. Not sure how it goes? Check out http://www.petethecatbooks.com/). After loosing a button, we are asked, “How many buttons are left?” So there is the obvious math you get from subtracting one when each button pops off. The equation is even included along with the numeral (3) and the number written out (three)…. a very important early literacy bonus. Dean also provides us with lots of colorful illustration to point to and talk about. What color are the buttons? What is Pete the Cat doing while all of these buttons pop off?
And here is a super simple craft to go along with it that we have been talking about in our summer reading program 2016 workshops!
Take a paper plate, fold it in half, and cut the center out. While the center circle is still folded, use a hole punch to make four holes. Take some stray yarn, wrap tape around the end, and let the littles lace the yarn through the holes. They can color or use stickers to decorate their buttons. With the left over of the paper plate, you have a steering wheel! Next up, sing Laurie Berkner’s Drive My Car!
