Storytime: Friends

During the long stretch without a children’s librarian at my new branch, several other librarians were coming over to cover storytimes. Right after I started my job, they continued for a couple of weeks so I could get settled and make plans. But I have now taken over storytime at my branch and will be making it all mine! Since I am new and want to meet everyone and make some new friends, I had my first storytime be all about friendship.

Welcome Song

I start with a Welcome Song and this session I am doing We Clap and Sing Hello.

We Clap and Sing Hello
We clap and sing hello. We clap and sing hello. With our friends at storytime we clap and sing hello.
We wave and sing hello. We wave and sing hello. With our friends at storytime we wave and sing hello.
We stomp… We sway… We jump… We sit…
(Sometimes, depending on the mood of the room, I ask for suggestions for others we can do.)

ABCs and Letter of the Week

Next we sing The Alphabet Song slowly while I play the ukulele. Then I bring out the letter of the day using flannels.

What letter do we have today, have today, have today? What letter do we have today? Its the letter ____! (To the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb)

There is a capitol and lower case letter and several flannel pieces for things that begin with that letter. For this week we had the letter F and there was a fish, a foot, and a flower.

Songs, Flannels, Props, Rhymes

Nothing to do with friends, but firetruck begins with the letter F and I will use any excuse to sing this song! 🙂

Hurry, Hurry Drive the Firetruck
Hurry, hurry drive the firetruck
Hurry, hurry drive the firetruck
Hurry, hurry drive the firetruck
Ding ding ding ding ding

Hurry, hurry turn the corner… climb the ladder… put the fire out… drive the firetruck

5 Green and Speckled Frogs – I used 5 frog finger puppets
Five green and speckled frogs sitting on a hollow log
eating some most delicious bugs (yum yum).
One jumped into the pool where it was nice and cool.
Now there are 4 little speckled frogs.

We don’t have a craft after toddler storytime because toddler and preschool are back to back. We made friendship bracelets out of cut up smoothie straw beads and pipe cleaners. I encouraged them to make patterns with the beads. These were great because the long smoothie straw beads covered any pokey pipe cleaner ends.

Not bad for my first storytime if I do say so!
