Toddler/Preschool Storytime: Bedtime

For my regular daytime storytimes, I decided to do a bedtime theme to help promote my monthly PJ storytime that takes place on the first Tuesday of the month at 6pm. I wore my pajams like I do for PJ storytime and everything! The big difference was that we worked on a craft after preschool storytime which I don’t normally do after PJ storytime. 6:30pm is a little late for some kids and I really do want to help them wind down at the end of the day.

Opening Routine:

We Clap and Say Hello
Letter of the Week was Y for yawn

For Toddlers I read:

Everyone is Yawning

Recipe for Bedtime

Cornelius P. Mud.

This book was also great because he answers over and over again that YES he put his toys away and YES he picked out a book. It went well with my letter of the week.

For Preschoolres I read:

I Dare You Not to Yawn

The Squeaky Door

This is one of my favorite read-alouds of all time! It is a retelling of a Puerto Rican folktale. It always goes over well. I make the kissing sounds and a very exaggerated squeak sound for the door. By the end, everyone is doing it with me. It is the best!

Songs, Rhymes, Fingerplays, Flannels

I played and sang Sleeping Bunnies on the ukulele. The kids LOVED doing the actions. I added on a couple of verses to make the fun last longer.

Sleeping Bunnies– I first heard this one from Miss Mary Liberry

C                                                     F
See the little bunnies sleeping till its nearly noon.

G                           C                                 G                   C
Come and let us gently wake them with a merry tune.

C                       C                    G             C
Oh how still! Are they ill? Wake up soon!

Hop little bunnies, hop hop hop
Hop little bunnies, hop hop hop
Hop little bunnies, hop hop hop
Hop little bunnies, hop  hop  hop
G              C
Hop hop hop (slowing down)
G               C
Hop hop hop (slowing down)

Some additional verses I added:
See the little birdies… Flap little birdies, flap flap flap

See the little kitties… Stretch little kitties, stretch stretch stretch

I used my Counting Ovejas flannel to count sheep. They helped me say the colors as I put them up and then we counted them. When we counted all 5 of them, I asked if anyone had fallen asleep and they got a kick out of that. 😛

One of the sheep was black so then we sang Baa Baa Black Sheep while I played the ukulele.

I was going to use this opportunity to sing Five in the Bed to take them off the flannelboard but was running out of time so skipped it.

Preschool Craft:

I feel like I took the easy road with this week’s craft but the kids enjoyed it a lot. We designed our own pajamas. I found a coloring sheet template, enlarged it, and brought out the craft supplies for them to decorate. We had crayons, cut up pieces of paper, Do a Dot markers, and glue sticks.
